Sophie and Ben Harris are the creative duo behind Ours and Hours, recently showcased at the Wild Rumpus Maker’s Market as well as other local markets around town, and online.
If that wasn’t enough, BOTH Ben and Sophie are teaching a class with Wild Rumpus coming up: Sophie- the sold out SHIBORI textile class this Saturday (watch this space – another one coming soon!), and Ben the upcoming POWER TOOLS + PALLET STOOLS.
Well. Quite a crafty pair indeed. We thought we’d sit down and find out a bit more about them…
Hi! We are Sophie and Ben Harris
SOPHIE: I make candles in teacups, wooden coasters/trivets/necklaces, sew bows and bow ties, paint and print-make, watercolour, hand lettering and a whole bunch of other things! My latest treasure is my wood burning tool.
BEN: I grew up in Nepal, a country where people have very little, so to give something a new life, or to create something out of a discarded item is an amazing thing. I love pallets, they are a great medium, every piece is unique. As well as that i work with found objects, metal, plastic etc.
WHAT GOT ME STARTED…
SOPHIE: If we go way back to the beginning, I’d have to say my mum. She always encouraged us to be explore all kinds of artistic avenues too. I started making things to sell a few years ago with my sister when we realised that maybe other people might like to have the kinds of things we want to have and make.
BEN: I was never good at woodwork as a kid, but Sophie and I decided to make a bed base with storage out of pallets as a project, and I guess from there I just got hooked! Woodworking is for anyone, give it a go!
IN OUR SPARE TIME..
Ours and Hours is basically our spare time endeavour! Ben and I love to spend time making things together, we also love board games, the beach, coffee, making things for friends.
THE BEST THING ABOUT IT IS... Seeing people excited or awe-inspired about something that we have made.
Sophie and I get to spend meaningful time together doing something we enjoy instead of just sitting in front of the tv or something. And there is such a satisfaction in visualising an idea and seeing it come to life, as you work at it.
BEN: That people would think about stuff they chuck out, and start being conscious of how much waste we create as humans, and maybe even think about how some of that stuff could be reused.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT WOLLONGONG...
SOPHIE: Some of the best people I’ve met have been in Wollongong. I love the community vibes, that is especially increasing among the creatives in the area.
BEN: I think it truly is a unique place, and we are lucky to call it home.
BETWEEN BEACH AND BUSH I CHOOSE
We both choose beach.
We both choose beach.
BEN: There is something about the salt air, and the waves that I love. Being able to go for a surf, or a walk, or a quick autumn swim is such a great thing.
BETWEEN TEA OR COFFEE I CHOOSE
BEN: I think coffee. I work as a barista, and so coffee is a big part of my life, and there is nothing like it to get you going in the morning. Although having said that i love tea, and have a huge collection of tea’s, mostly green, black and fruit mixes.
SOPHIE: ooooo… that’s hard. I guess I’d have to say tea, my first love.
